History You Can Touch

Nantucket’s historical attractions run the gamut from old mills to island history to architecture to art and antiques… Cliff Lodge puts you right in the middle of it all. Take a short stroll to the center of town, where you’ll find Oldest House (1686), the Old Mill (1746) and the Old Gaol (1805). Many structures have been designated by the Nantucket Historical Association, but if you walk down any of the streets fanning out from the nearby town center, you’ll stumble onto your own finds.

Don’t miss central Main Street, particularly the three handsome Georgian mansions known as The Three Bricks. Nantucket is home to the nation’s largest collection of eighteenth-century buildings and miles of the world’s most pristine beaches, all just minutes or an easy walk from the Inn.

Flora & Fauna

Endangered plant life and wildflowers abound on Nantucket and include the Russian olive, winterberry, hawthorne tree, Rosa rugosa, the tupelo tree, pink lady’s slipper orchid and Indian pipes. More than a third of the island has been protected and will never be built upon. These wild expanses are open to the public for nature walking, hiking or bird watching. In fact, Nantucket lies on the north-south flyway of migrating birds, making it very popular with serious bird watchers.

On the Water

Nantucket Harbor and surrounding waters are famous for Nantucket bay scallops. Bluefish and striped bass abound from May to October. Dating back to its beginnings as a famous whaling town, Nantucket offers some of the most extreme deep-sea sport fishing in the world. Even if you’re not trying to catch fish, you may catch a glimpse of seals, dolphins, tunas, blues, whales and the occasional mermaids frolicking in the surrounding waters.

Nantucket is bejeweled with architectural gems and is blessed with refreshing sea breezes, miles of sandy beaches and vistas unchanged over the centuries. The Inn sits on a quiet street in the heart of Nantucket’s Old Historic District, just a few minutes walk from the beach and the array of fine restaurants, galleries, museums and shops which line the famous cobblestoned Main Street.
